Can I direct query the Oracle database with SQL Plus?

I am about to start work on a SAP system which has an underlying Oracle(version 10) database. I would like to know if it straightforward to query the Oracle database directly iusing SQL*Plus for example ?

I have been using 8.5 for years without any problem. Recently I have been unable to create any new reports. I am not allowed to insert any field or text objects. I am also unable to modify any of the existing thousands of reports. I have reinstalled a number of times. It will work for a few objects and then the problem reoccurs.

I have looked in the Oracle Technet site for a version of Oracle suitable for OS X. I downloaded Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 because it said that it was compatible with Mac OS X. However, when I attempted to install the application, nothing happened. Upon closer look, the documentation seem to point to Max OS X server. Is there a version I can install on a MacBook running OS Snow Leopard.

I have installed Oracle but when I’m starting Oracle *Plus it is not accepting the username and password ‘scott and tiger’ and ‘system manager.’ It is also not accepting these user names and passwords.

Oracle: Can a character set be changed after a schema has been created?

My boss was so pleased with the response from this site that he asked me to ask another question! He was getting character set warnings when doing an export, apparently the charset of his db was different than where he was exporting (I think!).

In any case, we build a new db (schema) prior to loading it with data. Is there a way to change the character set on a new, empty db to prevent any errors? Is there some command we can use?

Developers are telling me a page loads more slowly on one server than another for the same query that is run. how can I trace this connection to find out what it is doing on both servers?
