Im failing to ping/putty my Linux box. I can ping from it and even after restarting iptables, xinetd, services, checked ports and even loopback address am at a loss?!?!?

Dark fiber vs. SONET

What is the difference between dark fiber and SONET relating to the 10GBaseER/EW. “ER is deployed over dark fiber and EW is used primarily with SONET”. I am not grasping this due to the fact that I though dark fiber is generally fiber not in use.”unlit”. And also I though ER dealt with computer networking, were as EW dealt with telephone networking.

Stress testing network and file servers before launch

Is there an application I can run to stress test my network and file servers? I want to make sure they will not die under stress when we go live with 2000+ users. Is there a product that can do this or will we need to script something? If that is the case are there any whitepapers or guides on setting this up?

Network Testing, Slow ping

Hello all,

I have just contacted a local firm to do a re-cabling to cat 6 for my company. But after the execrise. i decided to do a ping to see the time it take to ping.

1st i use a Cat6 and ping one of my server. Below is the reply.

Reply from 192.168.x.x: bytes = 32 time = 57 TTL128

Reply from 192.168.x.x: bytes = 32 time = 35 TTL128

Reply from 192.168.x.x: bytes = 32 time = 35ms TTL128.

Later on I use the cat5 as patch cable to connect to my pc and did a ping also. Below is the reply.

Reply from 192.168.x.x: bytes = 32 time = 1ms TTL128

Reply from 192.168.x.x: bytes = 32 time = 22ms TTL128

Can some one tell me what is the issue with the cabling. Because my network is very slow.

NTttcp errors & retransmit threshold

Hello All,
We trying to do some network quality assessment in our organization , for that we choose NTttcp tool that comes from Microsoft , and started to do some test.
looking at results of some test we done each test for 1 min approx i can see few erros and retransmit , my question is how to interpret that data what should be consider amount of Errors & Retransmit threshold for amount X time test or should not pear at all?.
