tagging ports on cisco switch

I have configured a 3750 switch to communicate to a 3550 switch and I set up vlans and I trunked the uplink ports. I am told that I should configure the ports for tagging, I am not sure what the tagging will do for me and if it is really needed. Please explain tagging.tks in advanceMsflex1
