Time to Live

If you ping a pc in a LAN the TTL value is 128 whereas if you ping a pc from one network to another network the TTL value decreases from 255 to 254. My question is why the TTL value is 128 in a LAN.

Is it possible to share files and printers between 3 pc's but not share them with the internet when connected to the internet? Restrict files to only identified pc's. One of my pc's may be connected wireless.

I cannot get a NIC to work on NT4 VM. I imported from a legacy machine that needs NT4 to run software installed.
