You also need to check your DNS configuration, not only assign an IP address. Check if the firewall is disabled on these machines. Ping each others by IP address: server -> client / client -> server. If it works, try by each hostname. Please post back any update.

VMware converter is probably the easiest route if you are planning on using VMware. http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/ If not. use your favorite full system backup program to make a backup of your entire server. Then create a virtual machine, and restore the backup to it.
