We are seeing some very strange behaviour in the performance of a query on our database. We have run the same query on the actual database server (s1) using sql+, and on a server (s2) 1 hop away (taking out network performance). The exact same queries, without any bind variables, are kicked off at exactly the same time. The query that is run on the s1 finishes in 30-40 minutes, whilst the query that is run from s2 takes 4 hours to finish. Even when the queries are started at different times during the day, no matter in which order, or only 1 at a time, the s1 query always takes less than an hour, whilst the s2 query always takes close on 4 hours. The explain plans for both sessions show the exact same paths, however, they have different costs (I believe this is due to a logon trigger that is forcing the optimizer_index_cost_adj = 10 when the s2 session is created). The OS user used to log in to s1 does not have any specific resource rights.

It has been noted that there are a lot of waits between reads for client side queries, which don’t seem to be happening on the server side query. The session statistics don’t really tell us much, other than that it is taking a lot longer to run.

Is this behaviour normal for server vs client queries? Does it make a difference that the costs are higher in the explain plan generated, even though the steps are exactly the same? If not, what else can we look at?

Looking for help with a an NFS issue

I have two shares one with zfs filesystem the other with a UFS filesystem shared via NFS. I use the shares as home directories for my users

The ZFS has the following in dfstab running on solaris 10
share -F nfs -o anon=0,log /mypool/home

The UFS has the following in dfstab running on solaris 10
share -F nfs -o rw,root=172.16.51.3:172.16.50.3 /usr/home

THese shares are both mounted to two seperate servers running solaris 8

server A @ — /usr/home (/usr/home)
— /usr/tester (/mypool/home)

Server B @ — /usr/home (/usr/home)
— /usr/tester (/mypool/home)

The problem I am having is as root user on server A

I can ‘touch’ a file, cat, cp, vi, and etc in /usr/tester
I can not do any of the above to my /usr/home

When I go to Server B the problem is just the opposite

I can ‘touch’ a file, cat, cp, vi, and etc in /usr/home
I can not do any of the above to my /usr/tester

I was alerted to this problem when I tried to do a usermod -d /usr/tester -m <userid>
I recieved permissions errors when coping the contents from usr/home to /usr/tester on server A

drwxr-xr-x 9603 root root 9603 Oct 3 19:05 tester
drwxr-xr-x 9602 root root 185856 Oct 5 12:07 home

Has anyone else experienced this problem before? What did you do to resolve it. Not sure of what other information is needed.

Regards,

Lance Longstreth

Our Spac solaris 10 box has only three disks (budge limitation), and they were configured with hardware RAID 1 (3-way). Obviously, the disk performance is going to suffer since both OS and DATA will live on the same mirrored disks, however, this part of disk configuration puzzles me even more: a soft RAID 5 is added on the top of 3-way mirroring for two slices (c0t0d0s5, and c0t0d0s7) where Oracle data will reside. Can any RAID expert comment on it please? It seems to me our OLTP type of Oracle Application will suffer from slow writing with RAID 5, not that disk space isn’t an issue.
