What new features would you like to see on ITKnowledgeExchange.com?
We all are on these type of exchange lists and it would be useful if the questions could ALL be listed at the top of the email. In this way I could glance quickly down the list and see if there are any questions I could answer or were interested in following. Ideally the list [...]

Virtualization advice for testing websites
You didn’t say what Web platforms you have but this sounds like a good use for <a href=”http://www.virtualbox.org/”>VirtualBox</a>. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Seen that VBox seems to be targeted to more “personal” use rather then business related I’d go to VMWare workstation where you may also consider to install some web stress tools (E.g. <a href=”http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e2c0585a-062a-439e-a67d-75a89aa36495&displaylang=en”>Microsoft Web Application [...]

Linux Backup
Hi, I’d use native unix tools: rsync -av source/ target/, or rsync -av source/ remote:target/ (if backup goes to a local/remote disk with enough free space to hold all the files on backed-up system) tar -czf archive.tar.gz , or tar -cjf archive.tar.bz2 (if backup should be compressed) if you want to write the archive on [...]

Can I run Linux or Solaris on Hyper-V, and get technical support for it?
SUSE Enterprise lInux is support inHyper-V and Red Hat support has been announced. This means you will be support for those OSes in Hyper-V. We continue to work with other vendors to provide the same level of support.

excuting sql loader from runrmtcmd from as400 to unix
Have you tried running the unix commands directly in the unix box (i.e. cd /home/dekbf/e3data;$sqlldr ekbf/ekbf + control=EPINTORD2CTL.CTL) ? Why do you need the ‘$’ before SQLLDR ? Have you tried something likes this ? RUNRMTCMD CMD(‘sqlldr ekbf/ekbf control=/home/dekbf/e3data/EPINTORD2CTL.CTL’) RMTLOCNAME(’191.0.0.9′ + *IP) RMTUSER(‘dekbf’) RMTPWD(‘ekbf’) ————————————-

Moving to VMware VDI
Depending on configuration, it may not be the answer. With VDI, you are effectively replacing local desktops with VMs. Terminal Services has been doing the same thing for many years (as the old Winframe admin speaks ). You have to balance the cost and re-architecture versus the savings. Could App-V, MED-V, or TS solve the [...]

Reinstall Domino Document Manager from Linux to Windows
I don’t believe that this is much different from moving Notes databases to a new server. 1. Configure your new Windows server. 2. Install Domino on the server. 3. Install domino.doc on the server. Domino.doc adds additional code to the Domino server (additional api calls). 4. Create your new directory (name and address book). 5. [...]

How number of processors correlated to Oracle database size
I don’t know of such a guideline, and I don’t think you should determine the number of processors based on the database size. I would look for metrics like transactions/operations per second, or something like that. A small database could demand more CPU than a much bigger one, depending on the amount of operations it [...]

Well, it appears that you have a situation I wrote about – masquerading is a variant of Network Address Translation (NAT), which can rearrange your IPs in any imaginable (and in a lot of unimaginable) ways… So I really wouldn’t suggest to manipulate your firewall after some advices on a discussion board – somebody skillful [...]

You could set the VM network connection as ‘bridged’ and asign some ip-address of the same subnet of your windows machine. Then you should be able to connect to any software on the Linux VM as if it was a physical server.
