She hooked up the laptop to her TV using a standard analog VGA cable to watch some netflix movies.

Next time she restarted the computer, she got a black screen, with the “Start Windows Normally” option, and a few others like “Recover”. Either option takes her to the screen where the green bar just keeps going and going and going, never loading anything.

It sounds to me like there might be a problem with her graphics card driver, or possibly she has a corrupted hardware profile, but I am not sure. I have not really tried much. Any ideas?
