Using APIs for editing MQ messages

Is it possible to print bar codes on an IBM4247 model V03 NOT using *ipds
We can print bar codes OK when using *IPDS. The printer is also connected through a Lexmark box alhtough the printer also has a lan card built into it and this can be used if necessary.Many Thanks
