Exchange server through VPN
I’m not sure if my answer will apply to your situation, but here goes… We use Exchange 5.5 on NT and our users are all Win2k/Outlook 2000. We use VPN for remote connectivity, and the way we connect to our mail server using Outlook over VPN is we put an entry for the mail server [...]

Spam guards
Hi Adrian, There are a load of utilities and applications for SPAM reduction, the four options you may consider in-line with cost and scalibilty are: 1. Managed Service (Message Labs, BlackSpider) 2. Internal solution (Clearswift Mimesweeper, Iron Port or similar) 3. Mail System Tools 4. Free Filters and Tools It is quite an industry, and [...]

Outlook Web Access on IE 5.5/6 gives second login
I may have missed something, but is she the only one that is floating and not logging in at the different stations? I would believe that the system is requiring that person to authenticate first to the domain and then log on OWA. All my remote users have to use that same process.

Monitor Internet Bandwidth
Use the ISA server built-in report utility, where you can define different reports to be run on f.ex. daily and/or monthly basis. ISA server will supply you with a number of reports including the one that you want. Tip: Run the report generator under a separate service account and not with your own user account, [...]

Continuous Event ID 9095 & 9096 in Exchange 2003.
Do you ever receive Event 9014 (System attendant is operational)? Is Exchange functioning? Sounds like the Exchange server setup may not have registered properly in Active directory or some WMI classes are missing.

Event viewer err Msg.
First off, check your default domain controller policy to sort out your incorrect SID. It’s most probably power users in the windows security settings. Static IPs won’t give you a problem unless you run DHCP as well and hand out the same IPs. Make sure subnet masks are correct. Your problem does look like an [...]

Exchange 2000 error.
Is the error on the client PC, or on the server? Does the error come up “out of the blue” or does it tend to happen when you do certain things, like opening messages? The error message you mentioned could possibly be caused by lack of proper security permissions. Also, check the event log on [...]

SOX Vulnerability Assessment & Audit Prodcuts
Although we’ve done the initial audit manually, I’ve been looking for some help in managing compliance. NetIQ, Legato and Configuresoft are the three possible solutions I’ve found so far. Of the three, Configuresoft seems to be the most complete. It not only logs any changes, you can set policies on your ‘Sox’ servers which prevent [...]

Best way to “route around” an SMTP SmartHost?
Hmmm … the Smarthost is an outsourced virus/spam scanner. I assume that you are wanting to route messages originating from inside to destinations outside your network. The only way that could work is to set up a separate SMTP service that isn’t tied to the domain/Exchange policies and “smarthost.” Of course, this is completely dependent [...]

You could have an infected client(s) that is [...]

Sending Email by SNDDST to Remote Host
Some email servers block email if they can’t verify the sender’s email address. By default the email address created by SNDDST would not be an address that could be verified. You could use the SMTP alias feature to translate the address to a verifiable email address. I ran into this situation several years ago when [...]

Of course. You always want your servers to have static IPs…never DHCP. Additionally, I’m pretty sure Exchange 5.5 wont let you install it without a static IP.

How many drives in your raid5 array where the IO is performing badly? In my experience, raid5 is not the best array type for this activity. I would suggest a test setup using raid 0+1 (striping + mirroring) for best IO performance results.

Looks like Exchange doesn’t think the SMTP address does not exist. Is this strictly with mail from the outside? Does this error happen for every email sent or sporadically?
