Can someone provide details on the default permissions on Exchange 2003 mailboxes. I have just started at a new company and the permissions are a mess. I want to clean them up and start over but want to make sure that the default out -of-the-box permissions are reset before continuing. I obviously dont want to remove permissions and then find that users cannot access their mailboxes. When I look under the Security tab on the company’s properties in Exchange System Manager, permissions are being inherited from somewhere, which appears to me to be giving pretty much full control to domain administrators and enterprise admins. Where are these permissions being inhertied from ? Do they need to be there ?

Hi all!
In my new job I inherited Exchange 2003 server. I noticed that Message tracking was disabled.
I decided to enable it, but the check boxes “Enable subject logging and display” and “Enable message tracking” are gray!
It seemed to me like permission issue. But I belong to Exchange Full Admin role. I even delegated control directly to my account via Delegation Wizard and also added my account that is Domain Admin to the local Administrators group.
I restarted the Exchange Management Service after that: no luck.
I installed Exchange Admin tools on my desktop and tried the same: no luck.
Any ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Bubba

I don’t know if this is an exchange 2003 permission issue or Outlook 2003 issue.

What does happen is a user is able to open anyone’s folder by using the open other’s users folder in Outlook including our CEO’s. NOT GOOD. I have just started there and this was brought to my attention. I have looked at the mailbox folder permissons and the inbox permissions and they are the same as Default user is set to none. and Anyomous is also set to none. So there are no rights given to any other user to access there folder, but yet they can. I am perplexed about this issue and have not been able to find any way to correct it. Which leads me back to the old administrator that maybe he set some permissions wrong on the exchange side which allows everyone to do that. If there is a registry key that I can implement or a group policy setting, I’ll try it. Thanks for your help.
