Can someone provide details on the default permissions on Exchange 2003 mailboxes. I have just started at a new company and the permissions are a mess. I want to clean them up and start over but want to make sure that the default out -of-the-box permissions are reset before continuing. I obviously dont want to remove permissions and then find that users cannot access their mailboxes. When I look under the Security tab on the company’s properties in Exchange System Manager, permissions are being inherited from somewhere, which appears to me to be giving pretty much full control to domain administrators and enterprise admins. Where are these permissions being inhertied from ? Do they need to be there ?

Hi,

We set up an Exchange 2003 Server at work and it seems to work fine using OWA, as long as the user is an Administrator. If we remove the user from the Administrators’ group, they get the following message in the browswer: “Local Security Authority Cannot Be Contacted”. Of course, we can’t make all users Administrators; is there another way to resolve this? It must have something to do with folder permissions, but I can’t figure out what they are.

When Exchange 2003 is set to NOT allow email to be sent to an external email account, you can get around this by creating a personal distribution group and “manually” forward an email to the external email address. However, so far I’m unable to via a “rule” automatically forward an email to the personal distribution group. The rule sees the distribution group contains an external email address and so does not work.
Is there any way to create a “rule” to automatically forward an email based on incoming address and subject to an external email address?
Thanks.
