After listening to the podcast it suggested that if you are running sharepoint and exchange on separate servers you need to install SMTP!?

Well from my point of view you don’t.

You just need to set the server name to your exchange server that is smtp enabled, and doing anything with SMTP Server / Service on your SharePoint box is just not needed and can just end up wasting a lot of time and frustration?!

Am I missing something here?

Migration from exchange 2003 AD to new exchange 2010 AD

Current Environment is:

Old domain ([strong]domain A[/strong]) two domain controllers, 1 Exchange 2003 sp2 server with about 90 users on.

New Domain is Parent domain ([strong]domain Z[/strong]) with exchange 2010 setup (HUB and CAS on one server, Mailbox on another server). Then two child domains where the users are setup ([strong]sol.domain.Z[/strong]) with trust setup when running DCPromo.

I’ve been doing a domain migration from Windows 2003 AD (domain A ‘old domain’) to a Windows 2008 AD (domain Z ‘new domain’). I have used ADMT for this and all users are on the new domain with correct NTFS permissions. No problem there (I don’t think).

Problem is trying to migrate the mailboxes over. I read that using ADMT first is not the best route but I have pushy managers. Enough said.

Exchange 2010 is installed on the parent domain and when I try to migrate a mailbox over using .prepare-moverequest I see green code ‘[strong]Appending x500….[/strong]’ with a [strong]warning ‘cannot find corresponding object for …..[/strong]’ and ‘[strong]1 mailbox(s) ready to move.[/strong]’ I assume I can move on to the next step which is new-moverequest. This is the problem. When i run the command I get

[strong]‘The operation couldn’t be performed because object ‘test01@domain.z’[/strong] couldn’t be found on ‘domain Z’.’

Why can’t the user been seen? When I try setting up a new user mailbox on the exchange server I can see all the users on the child domain (sol.domain.z) and proceed to set up the mailbox and have tested and works.

Any help would be most appreciated and I am get to an end where to go from here.

Configure Exchange 2003 hosting multiple domains with connection control for only one of the domains

I manage an Exchange Server 2003 SP2 (SBS 2003 R2) that will soon host multiple domains. The existing domain is locked down to receive incoming connections, by IP addresses, only from a subscribed filtering service (Postini). Ultimately, what I am aiming to achieve is to configure the server to accept all incoming connections on the newly added domains and leave the existing domain (mail) locked down to continue to receive only from Postini servers.

I have looked into adding Virtual SMTP servers for each of the new domains; adding new recipient policies for each of the new domains; configuring new SMTP connectors; and configuring routing groups. While I have found articles on each of these as individual topics, I am unsure what is the best configuration to achieve my desired results. Can anyone make a suggestion? Thanks!

Distribution Group with a different domain

We have Exchange 2003 and the mail domain is @domain.com. We now have a new domain @second.com that is coming in through our exchange server. I set it up correctly to receive these on an individual basis (putting it in as another email address on a user), but I’d rather set up the new email address from the different domain as a distribution group using our users on the server, but using the different domain (example@second.com). I can set up a distribution group with the server’s domain (example@domain.com) but I can’t get the distribution group to work for @second.com email addresses. I’m sure I’m not doing some settings right. Any help? Thanks!

Acquiring Company, Exchange Question

Hi we are a 100 person company running Exchange 2003 and we have acquired a 40 person company also running Exchange 2003. In the short term we would like to be able for both companies to access each others email distribution groups. Is this possible with a Trust or some other way?
