I am thinking about this within the context of a small rural nonprofit hospital that had three new, identical servers running Server 2008 that was primarily hosting their Exchange email server. They were virtualized with ESXi 3.5 but they did not have a management solution and there was no shared storage (SAN). Money (budget) was indeed an issue and an apparent impediment to forward progress on completing a solution. In fact, there was no backup implemented at the time. At the time (approx 6 months ago) it looked like a VMWare management solution and SAN was going to be rather costly (approx $ 25 K?). I wonder if costs may have come down with all the new offerings from 3rd parties and all the competition. Would it have been worth it for them to move to Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V? Remember our goal is to have high availability without breaking the bank. And what about having a private cloud for the small (one location) rural hospital?

I have converted an old Win2K Pro machine. Convertion went well, but for a couple of issues.
1. VM Tools will not install
2. The OS keeps looking for a driver for a VGA compatable display.
The tools aren’t a big deal, but without the display driver I get very poor resolution and color. Where can I get a “VGA-compatable” driver for Win 2000 Pro ? The system can’t find one at Microsoft. (I am stuuck with an old application that cannot be upgraded – not yet, anyway). BTW, I am using ESXi 3.5 standalone host.

Any suggestions?
