Symmetrix – choosing permanent or dynamic spare

I have a permanent spare and dynamic spares are available in the symmetrix array when a disk is going to fail the data available in the failed disk will be copied to permanent or dynamic spare? How the disk choose whether the data has to be copied to permanent or dynamic spare?

Has anyone ever seen a White Paper on the best way to utilize features of both VMWare and EMC Symmetrix based SANs in a real-time or rapid batch based upgrade from SQL Server 2000/2005 to SQL Server 2008 with minimal downtime for application availability?

ESX luns allocated on Symmetrix will not format.

Recently we allocated Symmetrix space for an ESX cluster. Some of the LUNs format fine but one or two come up with an error message that says “unable to read partition information from this disk.” All of the luns were exactly the same capacity. The ESX is currently attached to a Symmetrix array as well as a Clariion array.
