We have an old NT server “server A” we want to decomission.
It has ALOT of files and folders that most of the company uses on a daily basis, plus links and shortcuts the users have created on their desktops pointing to it.
The data is going to be moved to the new “server B” using the same file structure.

We received a suggestion from IT support at another one of our locations that we should/could create a new pointer in our 2003 DC’s WINS and DNS to point the users to “server B” whenever they going looking for the old “server A”.

How exactly do we do that, create the pointer record?
We do not use any ODBC connections on this server, it is a straight file/app server, nothing unusual about it.
All clients are XP Pro Sp3, win7 or vista, nothing older than that on the network except for the server we want to get rid of.

We currently have a flat network between seven schools in our school division using LANSPAN. Their is only one router in the network at our Central Office where all Internet traffic comes through. There is only one DHCP server at the Central office which serves all the schools. This dhcp server (Windows Server 2003) is installed on the main domain controller (along with DNS) and each school has a server which is part of the same domain (secondary servers). The DHCP server is configured to have one scope – 172.16.16.0 through to 172.16.20.255 to hand out IP addresses for all clients throughout the division’s schools. The problem is that while DHCP is functioning properly, the resource records (A records) are not being recorded in DNS. I thought this was suppossed to happen automatically. The zone is AD integrated, the IP addresses are being assigned via DHCP, DHCP option “Discard A and PTR records when lease is deleted” is turned on. I have forced DHCP to own the record rather than choosing the option to dynamically update DNS A and PTR records only if requested by the DHCP clients. I have added the DHCP server to the DNSUpdateProxy Group I have set Option 015 to the the AD domain name I have set Option 006 to only the internal DNS servers I have created and configured a user account for use as credentials for DHCP to register clients that are not part of the domain. Scavenging has been set at both the server level and the zone level. Any thoughts as to why the DNS resource records are not registering in DNS.

Hello, I’m setting up WSUS on our network to manage our updates. I’ve chosen to use the remote client setup for all our WSUS site servers, that way if anyone travels in between sites they’ll be able to pull updates from the local WSUS server. I’ve setup the HOST records in DNS and have one name for the main server. All the site servers are replicas of the main WSUS server. Everything seems to be working fine at the remote sites, the issue that i’m having is at our main site. We have 3 different vlans at the main site, 2 of vlans have clients and the other one is for all the servers. My issue is that the clients here at the main site do not see the main WSUS server for the updates. When I ping the main server name it pings a remote server out in the field. I’m unable to put a host record for these subnets since there’s not an actual server on these subnets. Is there a way to configure DNS to point these subnets to the local WSUS server? Or is this something that has to be configured at the local network level? Thanks,

We often run into problems where renamed computers have their old computer name record remain in dns b/c the lease never actually expired. This creates tons of orphaned records in DNS.

Does anyone have a recommendation on how to fix this? It seems windows DHCP will only delete DNS records that expire normally.

none of the employees were able to see the website internally. Externally it is fine. There are also still a handful of employees that can hit the site without a problem. The majority of use are getting an IIS message that says the site is under construction. There were no changes made that would have caused this. We are running Microsoft Exchange that has Outlook Web Access that uses IIS. Our website is hosted by an outside company. The domain name is a .com but I made an (A) record with www that allowed us to hit the site. Can anyone please help me????
