Deleted Items retention on Exchange 2007

Is the retention period (e.g. 30 days) referring to the date of the email or the date the email was placed in the Deleted Items folder?

Have a user (WinXPSP2, Outlook 2002, Exchange 2003, Active Directory) whose Inbox
emails delete immediately after closing them. There are no rules in
place, no storage limit violation. The Deleted Items folder is not
accessible (selecting the folder results in the “This applicaton has
encountered a problem…” prompt). This issue does not occur when the
user is using OWA. This issue is only impacting one user. I was
considering doing a delete/recreate user’s Outlook profile, but I want
to exhaust other avenues first. Any thoughts?

Unable to Delete Emails from Deleted Folder

I am having an issue deleting the emails from my Deleted Folder in Outlook 2007. I can delete some one-by-one and then once I delete a certain number, I receive the following error: “The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If problem persists, restart Outlook.”

Often when I delete multiple emails at once, I receive the same error.

Restarting Outlook does not help.
