What type of cable is suitable for an RS-485 interface?
There is some quite useful information, and a link to a specific forum for RS-485 at www.lammertbies.nl/comm/info/RS-485.html The last time I used this, we ran it over standard Cat5 and it was fine, with close tolorance 100ohm terminating resistors, but you may want to consider shielded cat 5 if the area is prone to strong [...]

Tell the user to stop drinking coffee while the laptop is in their lap. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The button “e” is probably have one of it’s clippings underneath those letters indicating the button at one time fell off and the user put it back on. I would remove it and reset it properly. ‘e’ is next to [...]

Will a hot row facing a wall cause hot spots?
The wall would just stop it from the heat going away straight back further. You would need a parallel flow of air movement in the “hot aisle” so the “hot air” won’t just sit back against that wall. You would need to have vents to suck in that hot air, otherwise it would just sit [...]

Exchange 2007 install
I would go with the HCL for the OS, because anything compatible with the OS you plan to install exchange 2007 on will be compatible with Exchange. Obviously it will need to be a 64 bit server and 64 bit version of the OS, that much is required for Exchange 2007. The rest is fine [...]

Backup of large amount of data
In reviewing Handy Backup website, it appears this software is more designed for home use. You may want to look at a business product designed for your server OS (Windows 2K3 example). Something like this probably would work for your environment size http://www.backupassist.com/index.html. It also has a plugin for SQL. Have you looked at amanda? [...]

Honestly, I would recommend if you want a data center with decent amount of power would be in the state of Texas. They have their own power grid. There are plenty of hosting companies out there. All big players will have a data center out there like Verizon, AT&T but you also those just dedicated [...]

Clean Installation of Vista, XP and Ubuntu
I would use an open source boot loader like Grub. You’ll have a lot more versatility with Grub than with the Windoze loader. Then find yourself a bootable partitioning tool like G-Parted and create your partitions. Your first partition will be your boot partition and only needs to be about 100M. You can choose whether [...]

A staging server is commonly used in web development. The staging environment is an intermediate step between the development (and test) environment and the poduction environment. Data center walls – what is considered secure?
Have you looked at the EIA/TIA 942 standard? You have to pay for the document but here’s a good primer on <a href=”http://www.ieee802.org/3/hssg/public/nov06/diminico_01_1106.pdf”>what 942 contains</a>. Definitely don’t want to go with drop ceilings. Nice document, thanks!

I can’t quote specific salaries however simply googling ‘it salaries india’ returns quite a few studies on this subject. Hope it helps and best of luck! I would imagine the growth potential would be good over there. You should expect somewhere in the range of 30k+ pm.

Network cabling requirements for high-speed data transfer
Depends on your business requirements and your client’s needs. Most cabling is CAT6E with gigabit capacity switches and NIC’s. The network backbones may be 10Gb fiber. You will need to consider distance and budget too. If you have the money, get the latest, the latest that has a clear roadmap for the future. If not, [...]

The correct answer will most likely need detailed information [...]

Chefs frying eggs ? All the above are possible, more likely that the motherboard was faulty, cor not configured correctly for the voltages of the processor and/or memory. It is possible, but most likely scenario is motherboard frying others than others frying MB.

If connecting with store bought patch cables works, and the ones you made doesn’t then the problem is with the cables you made. One or more of the pins aren’t making contact correctly. The only solution to fix the cables is to cut off the ends and try again. Making cables is tough. There’s a [...]

I think you should try to make all necessary corrections to use your cooling systems efficiently, as a first measure (i.e. seal those holes in the floors since they cause cool air waste, re-locate the air ducts as needed to optimize air flow, put the hot air return in place for that rack, and look [...]

Network hardware purchasing: Biggest hurdles
In my experience and from what I hear from clients the greatest barrier is getting approval. Looking at the bigger picture, it’s not necessarily getting management’s approval but rather IT’s failure to prove the value to management and help them see the underlying business reasons for needing it. It’s the bane of us IT folks [...]
