I have been asked to purchase a supply of CAT-5e network cables for use in our data center racks. I am having trouble estimating how many of each length we will need. Is there a rule of thumb for making this type of estimate, say, for a fully populated and properly configured standard rack?

Regarding to data network design where we should categorize port allocation table. Can it be or shall be included in design phase? Do we have standard for network design? If we do, what is the criteria to segregating active and passive port from structured cabling? References would be helpful.
