Our manufacturing company has a lot of customers which may require access to information on their network. Information may include engineering change orders, bills of materials, design documentation, etc. In some cases we can get access through a secured web portal (preferred). In other cases we may configure a network to network VPN tunnel where the traffic must initiate on our network and the tunnel carries only specified protocols. Occasionally we are asked to install a VPN client software (e.g. Nortel Contivity, Cisco) on our devices. Since we cannot control the protocols once the VPN client starts, we do not do this on clients connected to the company network. We are also concerned about split tunneling issues. We configure a kiosk machine with a dedicated link for this purpose. This can get overwhelming and is not an elegant solution.

What methods do other organizations use for peer connections? Do you connect to them or do you have a solution you have built for this purpose? If using a self-managed solution, what did you implement and what issues have you seen?

Thanks for your time.

A friend has asked me if I could resolve a problem he has with his small office network.
He has a server running Windows 2003 Small Business Server and two clients PC’s using XP. He has a fax program on one of the clients that he used to route his information from the server from to the client as the server does not have a built in modem. It used to work fine but after installing updates approx 8 months, he has to print out reports and fax them manually.

I have logged into the server remotely and noticed in the event log he is getting lots of kerberos errors, the message being:
The kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server ACER-WS1$. The target name used was cifs/Acer-ws1. This indicates that the password used to encrypt the kerberos service ticket is different than that on the target server. Commonly, this is due to identically named machine accounts in the target realm, and the client realm. Please contact your system administrator.

Also when I try and explore the client from the server in Microsoft networks I get the error:
\Acer-ws1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permission.

Logon failure: The target account name is incorrect.

I am logged in as administrator and I can ping the client by name and IP.
I have looked into kerberos online and understand it is an authentication service, but I am not too sure where to look to fin

d the names that are held within the kerberos service.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having an issue on Exchange Server 2003. When a user logs on to Outlook Web Access via our secure site, there is no GUI interface. It turns into what looks like a “directory” structure that is completely unuseable.

We also host our website on this server, and when we first put the site up, we lost the whole GUI interface. I simply republished the Remote Access features and it worked great for a few weeks. Now, all of the “Remote” options have the proper GUI interface, and the “Outlook Web Access” login looks proper, but the GUI fails after login just on that part.

Please help as I cannot figure out why it does not work!!

I have setup a test lab for E2K IM. I installed a separate Win2K server in the test AD Domain; all the latest updates etc. Installed the IM portion of the installation. I ran SP3 on the new server and and reapplied SP3 on the current E2K server that hosts email only. In SM i setup the new virtual server for IM using rvp protocol, added the SRV record to my DNS server. All looks good. i then try to logon to an IM session using MSN Messenger; email address of user that has IM rights and password on domain, but it keeps coming to back to the login, no errors just does not connect to IM server internally. I have googled and searched MS site for remedies or even troubleshooting tools, but nothing seems to point to this problem.
Under SM and the new IM Virtual Server, i setup as home to house the user accounts, but cannot see anything under the IM virtual server, nothing in the imdata directory either. Can i create another virtual IM server in the same location?
All help is greatly appreciated.

I seem to have 2 issues. Both are on the same setup.

Windows 2000 Server running Exchange 2000. Both have all the latest patches and SP’s.

1) Mail will flow inbound just fine. Some mail will flow outbound just fine. Certian addy’s just have in the SMTP queue ( AOL,Yahoo, Bellsouth ). Other mail going out ( gmail and several others ) seem to flow fine.

2) In the Exchange System Manager –> under tools –> Status has a RED X on my mail server name and under status it is UNREACHABLE. All services are running and as I said in issue 1 mail comes in fine and certian mail going out.

Any advice on this would be great.
