What do you make of the hybrid IT movement?
That’s a wide open question. From the perspective of working with consultants, I really enjoyed that environment. I could be set up almost instantly. Saves the time of rebuilding a machine with IT configurations on it. It was also helpful in keeping employees’ desktops virtual as well for later use. datacenterhelp.com

Are you surprised by the switch from second to third platform technologies?
It’s funny, I’ve never even heard of “third platform”. I’m not surprised by the numbers though. These technologies are all the rage. I suspect the reasoning behind PC and Ethernet stagnation is that many businesses already have that infrastructure in place and, perhaps, they’re not spending additional money on new technologies. But who really knows? [...]

Does cloud computing need to be clarified more for the public to understand?
Thanks in large part to the marketing departments at IT/security product vendors, many people working in IT aren’t even clear on what “cloud” means. The reality is, “cloud” has a different meaning to different people and I don’t know that the general public will ever have a true grasp of all the technical details. Does [...]

How is your company handling Cloud Email Security? Sandboxing?
Good question Chris. I’ve found that the more hoops you make your users jump through, the greater the chance they’ll find a workaround. I haven’t seen any clients take the sandboxed email client approach but it’s worthy of consideration. I’d just recommend making sure you think things through first and get management on board before [...]

How often should a company reevaluate its cloud service provider?
This is the big unanswered question about cloud computing. The reality is that most organizations are not evaluating their cloud providers at all. That’s a dangerous approach. You absolutely need to be asking the tough questions up front and then making sure they keep their promises moving forward. Periodic and consistent is the best approach [...]

Cloud certification — worth it?
I’ll say this right now, if you don’t have the certs today, most places will not even consider hiring you. With that said, we have hired a few people here to help us go virtual from a contractor and the DOD required them to have their certs, and one them was Security+ as a MUST!!! [...]

Are you afraid of the cloud?
“The Cloud” is a vague term, which needs to be addressed in terms of a specific project. NO! I am not afraid of the cloud but you must carefully evaluate specific projects. Is compliance preventing you from moving to the cloud?
I do think this is something that’s holding people back. I’m a proponent of cloud services – have a lot of clients in that space. I’m just concerned because I see so many people blindly trusting cloud service providers. They say “Is your system secure?” The answer is “Yes!”, of course, and then nothing else [...]

What is the difference between dedicated data center and Private Cloud? What are the cost savings when opting for Private cloud over a dedicated center
Essentially there is no difference. As far as cost, it all depends on what kind of solution your organization needs. As someone who works with Dell, I would recommend the tool they provide on their site to assess your individual needs and choose the solution that will best fit your organization. Check this out [...]

Will you host Linux on Azure?
My organization will probably not host Linux on Azure initially, but will wait to see how the technology/platform plays out. For now we are running Linux hosted on VMWARE hypervisor based virtual machines with Apache, Tomcat, and Oracle based applications hosted in-house. Thanks for sharing the article/news though.

Open IT Forum: What cloud concern do you need addressed?
OK I see two issues: 1. Larger organisations being able to allow internally-hosted and supported applications and webs. This does require in-house expertise or else contracted support and development from external organisations. However it may be preferable to host the data in-house (even if at a data centre) and retain maximum control. This needs to [...]
