I have two years of experience as a technical support analyst for Elsevier employees where we had access to Elsevier servers through Citrix Metaframe. I worked on Active Directory in creating accounts (Mail and File) on Windows Server 2003. I have an engineering background. I have not had any theory on networking, though I worked on a little bit of it. Please recommend certifications that would help me become a network administrator rather than someone who remotely supports/administers accounts on a server.

With all the talk about security certifications and working in IT security being hot right now and in the future, I was wondering if it would make more sense to try and get the Security + certification before trying to get another IT certification such as the MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator)? I’ve heard that most certifications (other than security) don’t mean that much anymore to employers, and that skills now beat having certifications. Also, I noticed for many other security certifications such as the CISSP, the requirements to take the test are very strict, in that you need to have 5 years of experience working in security. How does one get that experience if they’ve never specifically worked in security? What if someone was more of an IT Generalist, or IT jack-of-all-trades where they worked? I think I want to head in the security direction, but how do I do it? For the past couple of years, I’ve worked for a small firm where I am the only one that does all the IT stuff, and security was really never an everyday issue. My job title probably ties more closely to an IT Administrator or Systems Administrator. I appreciate any help and feedback. Thanks very much.

How is the affecting CIOs in the midmarket? Are you hoping that the number of H-1B visas is increased or would you prefer to use “home grown” talent? Will this even affect your business?

Hi,

I have been working on AS400 in various capacities (operator, ops analyst, tech support) for approx 11years and am very keen to move over to programming in RPG but don’t really know how I should go about making that move.
There never seems to be many opportunities for trainee/junior programmers but allways plenty for more senior positions.
I do have some experience, when I first started on AS400 I spent 6months learning to code but got sidetracked to Operations. I also regularly code with CL.
Can anyone give me some suggestions as to how I can break through into this?

Thanks in advance.

How do I create a network design for a large business? The following is the scenario and the requirements, I need so help please.

An Ice Cream Factory with 5 stores, citywide and has connectivity to the corporate office in Austin. Each store is responsible for maintaining its inventory locally, but must communicate with the warehouse on a weekly basis to keep inventory current and stocked. Each store has a Manager?s office, Administrative Assistant?s office, and an employee lounge/conference room. The only wireless capability in each store is for the customers? convenience while they are visiting the ice cream shop. The creamery factory and warehouse is located in Round Rock, a small town near Austin. Each week, all employees are required to attend a videoconference at the local stores on Monday afternoon. This is a national chain that spans the continental US. The country is divided into regions; Northeast, Southeast, Central, Northwest, and Southwest. Your potential network is located in the Central area of the country and must have connectivity to the other regions. The Regional Office is located in Brenham, the home of the original factory. Customers worldwide are allowed to place orders for ice cream over the Internet. All online orders are processed through the Regional Offices.

Design a network for implementation. You will need to decide what type of WAN connection will be best for your network. Also, you will be responsible for the purchase of All Equipment And Cabling for all of the locations of the network. You will need to design the Network Topology, physical and logical; determine all of the network and computing equipment, cabling, data transmission method, type of network, and any other items required to design the best possible network for your client.
