This question is not about doing something illegal toward the SQL Server Licensing; on the other hand it is about knowing relationship between Licensing and hardware.

Question: I have SQL Server 2005 licensed for 2 physical CPUs. Recently, I bought a system with 4 CPUs to replace the old machine. I know that I must have License for 4 CPUs, but hypothetically, if I install 2 CPU Licensed SQL Server on 4 CPU machine, will SQL Server just recognize 2 CPUs?

To cut it short, if I install SQL Server with 2 CPU licensed on 4 CPU machine, will it work with only 2 CPUs and ignore other 2?

Does CALs licensing work the same way?

I am trying to open Licencing on Win Server 2000 to check how many CALS the server has. When I open it I get a popup asking which domain I want to administer, I select our network domain and than it tells me my domain controller doesn’t have the service running and closes the Licence Tool. How do I get it to look at my local machine instead of the domain controller. The reason I am doing this is i am getting “computer has reached maximum connections” when trying to acces the file share on the server.

We are runing XP desktops and connecting to a Windows Server 2000. When running “net config server” on the Server 2000 box it tells me I have unlimited connections which is strange?

I have made one small service program for windows server that is actually small gaming server program. The question is do I need to buy license (CAL) for every player that is connecting to my game server? Or the CAL is for users that directly connects to RDS? The players are not using any file sharing, windows stuff etc, they just get game specific information over UDP. I didn’t find anything about licensing program for this situation. What is the truth?

Thanks in advance
