What is the best practice in the retention or use period of backup tapes? Is it advisable that backup tapes are retained or use only until the expiration dates recommended by the manufacturer? Is the Symantec Backup Exec 2010 has the feature to identify tape that is not working (backup to tape has failed)? Please advise.

Symantec and most backup software will tell you of the media is bad or if the backup job has failed so do not worry about that. The practice I follow is monthly full backups are kept indefintely or 5 years depending on whose data it is. Incremental and differential backups are kept for much shorter periods. Usage depends on the media. I used to compress the data so that 40 GB fit on a 20 GB tape. Tapes would be re-uised once expired. If you are using a library the software knows which slots the availabe tapes are in and will use them. If it is a single loader you will have to remove non-expired tapes so that the expired tapes can be re-used or put in new ones.

Hello, The manufacturer would be the one to consult about the reccommended life span of the tapes. It is possible that there is an unanswered media alert or a cleaning needs to be run. What is the error the failed backups are getting?
