 Summarize Maximum Summary Values in Crystal Reports 8?

I need to be able to summarize the Maximum Value for multiple groups in a report. Because I'm using the Summary function, I'm getting an error that it's not possible to do this. Any ideas? I am desperate! Unfortunately the data I am exporting populates multiple (but inconsistent) lines of duplicate data for within each group, so I'm using the Maximum function to identify the value I need...however, now I can't summarize the Maximum values for the groups in order to get a total by day. I'm using Crystal 8. Thanks.
