What is the best free open source application to use to create our intranet? We have HTML and Java developers on hand but would rather use a package. Is there anything out there that is customizable and easy to use? We need to have a file area, a forum and blog posts.

I’d agree with the suggestion for Drupal, with a multitude of free add-ons and modules available for almost any functionality you can think of. If you have someone with a little php knowledge and have this set up on your webserver, it is fairly straightforward (dependant on what OS and web server you use it can be a bit tricky). Once the administrator has loaded and configured the modules, it can just be handed over to users to maintain (I set a site up in Sep 09, and I have only had to revisit/support it 2 or 3 times since).
As I know only Drupal development gives customers:
* a web-site build on the safe system which is based on open source code, the system which is tested by million users all over the world. professional content management system;
* confidence that CMS producer won’t disappear;
* web-site with moderate price even if there is a need in
*development of some specific features which are not developed in Drupal yet.
I would also go with Drupal. For me, this is the best way to create an intranet for an organization. Drupal Development provides multiple modules and functionality to users. Furthermore, it is largely supported by large community of Drupal developers so that you can get regular updates. Just go for it
