I’ll give you my answer to this based on my personal experience – I have an HP StorageWorks X510 Data Vault. It’s based on Windows Home Server, so for a home storage solution it’s FAR easier to use than NAS. I have four PC’s on my network; my 10 year old son installed the Data Vault, we installed the client software on our PCs and its automatic. My PCs are backed up every night – it has built in deduplication so those files that I have on multiple PCs aren’t taking up space. It has built-in video conversion tools, media streaming, local and remote file sharing.

We just announced our X310 – a lower cost version of the X510. It has all of the same features minus the video conversion and remote media streaming. I have a blog post with podcast talking about it: X310 blog and podcast.

There may be other products that best address what you want but I love my Data Vault!
