Subnets
[strong]I would like to know how to convert the subnet mask into allowable subnets and hosts. For example, I have a class C subnet mask of 255.255.255.224. How do I know that this allows 6 subnets and 30 hosts? My text book is not very clear on this. [/strong]

for subnetting you should add bits tothe right.you can have 6 subnet with 3 bits( 2^3=8 >6) so you should add three ONE bits to the right of the other ONE bits.and the remaining ZERO’s are showing you th e host number.

11111111 . 11111111. 11111111 . 11100000
255 . 255 . 255 . 224

111 = up to 8 networks you can have
00000 = 2^ 5 = 32 hosts maximum

• Your maths a bit off - a /27 (255.255.255.224) gives you 8 subnets of 30 usable hosts. The URL Jinteik posted is a great resource, and good luck in your studies...
