Apparently 192.168.1.1 is a gateway along the path between you and the destination device. This is a typical error message if a route cannot be created between the source and destination hosts. Can you provide more information about your network configuration? Are you perchance on a wireless client pinging a wired client? The 192.168.1.1 device may be your access point and acting as a router between your wireless client and the rest of the wired network... or vice versa, between your wired host and the wireless network. Please give us more details about your network configuration and we will be glad to help further.

Wireshark is a good tool for monitoring the traffic on your network.
