Is this the user signon or is it a BIOS password? What happened to want to reset your password? Are you locked out or just want to change the existing password?

What kind of device, phone, tablet, pc, laptop? if computer what OS is it running ? Some devices you may be able to boot in a safe mode  to correct it or if you have the OS CD you can sometimes recover it from that.

Why you don't have original disk/licensed disk? Is your OS OK? What user you asked for? If it is a general user, you can log in by administrator user ID. What OS is there? Is it an office/your personal case. Please back with more details.

Buy Windows recovery CD from ebay - works every time password reset. Also try restarting the computer.

I wonder why a lot of vendors stopped shipping the Windows media disc when you buy a new computer? My last 2 had no CD. It was pre-installed but I'm out of luck if my drive crashes? Not right they should still ship the CD media..

Just gave this some more thought...My last 2 laptops did not come with a built in CD drive. Maybe that is why they don't ship the media anymore. I do have an external CD drive for backups and ripping my CD collection and burning custom CD's.

Today most of the PC/laptops come without set up CD/DVD and the OS is pre-installed/activated. Once it is crashed/formatter, now the problem begins. So it is safe to create setup disk/rescue disk/password reset disk prior to avoid/solve this types of problems. You can link here for more info, https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/959061/creating-a-password-reset-disk-in-microsoft-windows-vista.

If a recovery disk wasn't created by you when you obtained the PC, then you should take it to a computer repair shop or professional and have them do it. Random anonymous (no identification/authentication) comments should not be made in ethical forums about how to get around password protection. There is no way to verify PC ownership.
