SSRS script when no records found

I have a script that checks if records are found, if not, return a default row:
IF EXISTS ( ' + @SQL1 + ' ) BEGIN ' + @SQL1 + ' END
ELSE
BEGIN
select 0 FIELD1, 0 FIELD2
END
The downside to this is it runs the SQL twice. Is there a better solution?
I have tried IF @@ROWCOUNT = 0, but that seems to return 2 results set and SSRS report seems to hang.
