I have installed sql server 2005 in local machine and I am trying to connect to that locally. but it is not working. I tried both istalling as default and also by naming as instance. sql server configuration manager shows the services running but I can not connect to in management studio.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Do you still have both instances installed?

What error message are you getting when you try and connect to the default instance? To the named instance?

No, I uninstalled the instance installation ans install new one as default.I do not get any error but I can not connect to.I mean when I want to connect, “database engine” , the local machine is not one of the options.I just can connect to other servers!

I guess as adefault it should recognize the local machine, right?

No, by default it does not recognize the local machine. You should only need to type in the name of the local machine. When connecting to the local machine instead of the machine name you can also put a period (.) in the computer name field and it will connect you to the default instance on the local machine.

I tested out my setup on a local machine (2nd machine here at my desktop, connected across the network. Old Dell machine, P3 processor, Server 2003, SQL 2005) and had no issues seeing the instance via Mgmt studio. However, I went to my production machine (hosted in Los Angeles), essentially the same setup but better machine (still Server 2003 and SQL 2005) and I cannot see the machine within the Database Engine in Mgmt Studio. I did try your "." in the machine name and "poof", no problem connecting to it. Why can I not see the machine on this hosted machine, but here locally I can? Any thoughts?
