For two arguments, COALESCE and IFNULL are identical. COALESCE, however, takes any number of arguments, and examines them left-to-right, until if finds a non-null.

    FWIW, COALESCE and VALUE are also identical in function. As far as I know there are no performance differences among the lot. None is better than the others, though in my experience I've seen VAULE used more than COALESCE.
