SQL Server Passwords
I inherited SQL 2005 server from a previous employee and the SA password is currently stored and saved in the GUI. This has allowed me to do my job up until now. I have what I think to be the password but I am unsure if it is correct. I am afraid to remove the stored password to check. Is there an easy way (through command line or some other route to test to see if I have the correct password before removing the one stored in the GUI.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Why don’t you just try to change the password? If the old one works, you will successfully change to the new password. If the old one doesn’t work, then you will have confirmed that you don’t have the valid password to the account (bad news!).

You should be able to alter the password with:

ALTER LOGIN sa WITH PASSWORD = ‘<new password>’ OLD_PASSWORD = ‘<old password>’

If the old password doesn’t work, then you can try to do this without the old password and force it to a new password value, as:

ALTER LOGIN sa WITH PASSWORD = ‘<new password>’

If neither of these work, then you have a problem…
