I purchased a preexisting building and am in the process of converting it to a DPW faclity. Do I need a sprinkler system? Can I sprinkler just the repair area and not the storage area also? I am in upstate NY.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

If you renovate the building, you’ll probably be required to update the fire-protection systems to current code requirements.

The best person to ask is your local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction). This is often your local Fire Marshal and they are always happy to talk with you. Once they give you their interpretation (and their word is law), contact a local firm specializing in fire protection systems for options which meet the AHJ’s ruling.

Just keep in mind that if you are storing special goods or large volumes of combustible materials (including Plastic) you may need a higher level of sprinklers/water volume. As per the other comment you need to discuss with licensed contractor or review the local legislation or building/fire code.
