I have been testing with spiceworks (www.spiceworks.com)to do workstation inventory and discovery. It has been doing a great job of finding "Mystery" machines. (machines that are not part of the domain) Does anyone have any experience with it or can reccomend something similar?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

SpiceWorks is a great software and it’s free!!! I had some experience with it and found it really helpful. In the past I used a lot NAGIOS but needs many configurations and work.

currently we are doing our helpdesk via an access database form. it works but not great. I just installed SpiceWorks and it looks great. thanks for the idea. I will let you know what I think once I get into it deeper. We used to use TrackIt at an old employer. Costly, remote control was choppy and bad video, inventory tracking was not anyway near this product.

so far I am liking it but I have already placed a support request with them. The issue I have is right now our input form on our production access database we use for our helpdesk has entries for phone number and department name. our reporting system uses the department name to separate the reports because our affilliates are separate companies and we need to know how much of our time is being used up by each affilliate. I don't see anyway of doing this in SpiceWorks. Hopefully we can get something like that done in this program because it works GREAT!

To further the discussion I have spoke with a spiceworks support person and they are releasing a new version either in april or may of this year which is supposed to support letting users input information such as department, location etc. Hopefully they will have the option of setting up multiple inputs since our company needs to track deparment, location and room numbers sometimes. This looks to be a great product so far! I have run a scan of my network and it is finding most all equipment but does not classify our terminals very well. Either comes up as unknown or network device. But there is an option to do a reclassify of several objects at once so that is not a big hurdle.
