Hi, can I speed up a video in Linux? Basically - I don't want to have to use a VLC player. I do work for a video company and I have to speed it up. Any way to do this?

There are a few sites with info but they are format specific. I agree with Subhendu Sen, why not use VLC? It’s very flexible and works well with all video formats I have tried. If you post back the current video format and player you are using we can provide a more details solution.

On Linux, working with multimedia related files is not so smooth, as per my experiences. You can use various tricks, but you must install/configure related dependencies/ repositories first as license issue. You mentioned that you did not want to use VLC player, but why, that you did not mention while VLC is a preferable media for running audio/ video files. However. you can use mplayer for Linux and this is somehow more comfortable for audio/video files. You can download/install first and must configure properly.
