 Speed up Exchange 2003 over VPN?

Hello all,

I have a windows 2003 network with 2 servers, one in each of our offices. They are set up to use a site-to-site VPN over a business DSL line (768k/384). The server at the primary office also serves as our Exchange 2003 server. I'm just rolling this project out to the users and at the remote office they're complaining of grossly slow email sending/recieving. There are only 8 people at the remote office and they're not power email users by any stretch but does anyone have any ideas on how I can speed up the data flow? I know I could get a fatter pipe, but other than that? Are there any data compression options? Or can a have exchange replicate their mail down to the remote office server for storage?

Answer Wiki:
Look into a 3rd party product called Cemaphore in order to cache e-mail data on the local server. Before I tried that though, I'd make sure the remote clients have Outlook 2003 set to cached mode. Most of my VPN usres have found that to be sufficient as cached mode keeps a local copy of the Exchange data synched between the clients and the E2K3 server.

I agree with the above and in addition check out using L2TP/IPsec instead of straight IPsec tunneling for your VPNs. On the Windows platform L2TP offers significant gains in bandwidth using compression that you can’t get from IPsec tunneling.
