emails are being stuck in the "messages pending submission" queue and the clients are getting emails 2-3 hours after they are sent. after looking in the queues, i found that there are a lot of spam emails that are supposedly going to invalid email accounts. i have sophos and puremessage installed on my exchange 2003 server. the emails disappear after restarting server or the iis services

One suggestion would be to see if you can have one of your clients send you a copy of the emails that they receive 2-3 hours late and look at the message headers to try and determine where the email is being delayed.
