I am currently trying to learn how to "push" Windows updates from Active Directory (MMC)and need a software packaging program. Is there a free or cheap program that fits this description? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I can’t answer your specific question, but if you’re looking for a system to manage, and deploy MS updates, check out WSUS.

Another solution is GFI Languard Security scanner v.6. You can try 30 days free http://www.gfi.com/.

You may want to look into using WSUS from Microsoft. It is fairly easy to install and configure. Only problem it just pushes update for the OS and not any other applications. You can configure your computers to obtain the updates from the WSUS server. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/updateservices/default.mspx

Does it push updates such as service packs?

WSUS does push service packs. It will download any update available from the Microsoft site that you could get from their windows update website. You can specify the types of updates for the system to download and schedule the update times for the machines. It will also download other application updates from microsoft for items such as Office, Visio, SQL Server, etc. We are using it where I work and we have configured active directory to point all workstations at our WSUS server for their automatic updates. You also have the ability to approve/unapprove updates for download as well as determine whether the update is needed on a machine. HTH, Gary

do a search for WinInstallLE, or get it off of a microsoft OS CD like 2k server or 2k3 server (the more recent the better).
