Hi all Starting a couple days ago we have started getting SMTP: The server is not responding errors when sending to a few domains, highstream.net, charter.net and a couple more, I can ping those domains mail servers and do tracerts to them, when I try to send mail to them I get the SMTP error, I can send to most other domains that I have tested, any tips would be great. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Try Telnet to sever(s) on port 25. You should get a reply giving the server name and type.

I aggree with the the previous reply. Just because the server is up doesn't mean SMTP is running (port 25), or isn't being blocked by some firewall somewhere along the path. I like to use a utility called nconnect (or Notes Connect). It allows me to ping a specific TCP port number. It comes preconfigured with a bunch of the standard ports but it also allows you to specify any port manually. It's available in the Lotus sandobox for download (just google nconnect.exe). Btw, there is also a java version available (jconnect.exe i beleive) if you preferred.

I have tried Telneting to thier servers telnet m2.highstream.net 25 and it tells me m2.highstream.net ESMTP then I try to do a manual email from telnet and I get a error 451 mail server temporarily rejected message (#4.3.0) I don't think there are any problems with our SMTP we can send email to other domains, alltel, hotmail, AOL, ETC.... any more suggestions?

You can look to rfc1893 to decipher the "4.3.0" return. Read this as "class.subject.detail" The class=4 means: 4.X.X Persistent Transient Failure A persistent transient failure is one in which the message as sent is valid, but some temporary event prevents the successful sending of the message. Sending in the future may be successful. and subject=3 means: X.3.X Mail System Status Mail system status indicates that something having to do with the destination system has caused this DSN. System issues are assumed to be under the general control of the destination system administrator.
