Hello All,

Please can anybody enlighten me with regards to my problem?

We have a non Lotus Notes server located in the warehouse which runs an application (Kronos) that is supposed to mail out some information regarding the application activities. I have created an e-mail address say, applicationname@company.co.uk to be used for this purpose. Th email file is in one of our R5 Notes server. The mail is only intended for people within our Notes PAB.

We have an R4.6 MTA server which acts as our SMTP server for our external incoming and outgoing e-mail.

Using Lotus Notes client, I can successfully send mail within our domain and outside our domain. Unfortunately the non-Lotus Notes application can't seem to send the mail out. The error message relates to "can't open gateway/port 25".

I have looked at the server where the actual mail database reside and the SMTP listener task is disabled. I am thinking of enabling this task but would like to know how it would affect our external MTA. Also, would it resolve the issue we are having?

I can't be specific because I don't know anything about Kronos and Domino 4.6 is pretty old, however, here are my thoughts. SMTP is pretty straight forward. The Domino 4.6 machine should have an SMTP task running since you say it is acting as your Internet e-mail gateway. You could test this by using Telnet to connect to it on port 25 which is the standard SMTP port. Telnet is not SMTP so you won't be able to do anything beyond get a response indicating that you connected but if you do get a connection then you need to look at the Kronos box and verify that it is trying to send the e-mail to the correct box, the Domino MTA. The error message suggests that it is not and I would follow that up first.
You could enable the SMTP listener task on your R5 mail server but that puts extra load on the server and complicates the environment as well as being a potential security risk. You may also want to consider upgrading your Domino versions.

First, Crono, is just using the mapi interface to send the smtp mail. You need to make sure that SMTP MTA agent is running in your Domino server. SMTP MTA is notorius for having problem.

Once you have your Domino server running with SMTP MTA agent, send some email from an outside account and see if you gt the mail. Then configure your Cronno apps, to send email directly to the IP address of the Domino server on port 25. You might need to configure the inbound setting to allow email in from the IP address where Cronos is running.

Thank you both for your help. After much checking and tweaking, we found out that it was McAfee anti-virus that stopped the mail from being sent out. We have removed McAfee from the server and installed Sophos instead. Now Kronos mail are getting sent out to our staff. What a relief.
