SMTP on Webservers

Hi All I have two webservers which have network load balance set up them to balance requests for all our corporate websites. This works fine until a visitor uses the site to send us an email. For some reason the second of the two web servers cannot send the mail, get an error saying "The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt" The two webservers are set up identical, the websites on them are exact copies of each other. I have checked the SMTP settings within IIS and they appear to be exactly the same. Obviously the web sites always have the same IP no matter which server serves the page. Does anyone have any idea why the 2nd of the webservers cannot send mail? Regards Stuart

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I’m going out on a bit of a limb here, my assumption is that the servers themselves are in Private IP space, and are NATed through the load balancer in from the outside world.

If that is the case, my first guess would be to check the outbound NAT configuration in the load balancer. Also check the logs for the load balancer to see if they shed any light on the situation.

Also check the mail server to see if it has any restrictions on the IP addresses it can receive from. If you know which webserver is sending back the error saying "The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt" , go to it, and try connecting to the mail server and see if it is accepting port 25 connections. On a Windows server you'd open a DOS session and do a 'telnet mailserver 25'.

Thanks for the responses guys. I have been away from the office for a few days and on my return I find this is working, my suspicion is one of the web developers made a change and the two copies of the websites were out of sync Thanks again Stuart
