Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Here are a link that may assist you in your problem but, to answer your question, it is enabled in the BIOS in the hardware section.  Hope this helps.

You'll need to boot into BIOS to enable S.M.A.R.T. The exact steps will depend on what BIOS you have. Enabling it shouldn't allow you to read the drive, but it might enable messages that tell you what's happening. -- Tom

Smart HDD is a malicious software that will display fake alerts, claiming that several hard drive errors were detected on your computer. The alerts are professional looking pop-ups and when you click on them, you’re advised to buy Smart HDD in order to fix this errors. To remove this virus follow the steps in the article malwaretips.com/blogs/uninstall-smart-hdd/

Yes it is. This technology monitors the health and status of your harddrive. It's not like there's life without it and it's surely not error free, but it's good practice to have it enabled. Usually, SMART is enabled from the BIOS. From a technical point of view, this could be done from some piece of software too, but I've never encoutered it.

Smart HDD is a malicious software that will display fake alerts...   There is a "S.M.A.R.t. HDD" malware ( sample discussion ), but from the description in the question, it doesn't seem to be related to this problem.   It's always advisable to scan for malware of any kind and to run updated AV and related software.   Tom
