Hiya all,

After lloking into event viewer, after getting admin tools back, found a conflict with dcom service.

Looks like disabling that sorts it. PC is now miles faster now.

Thanks for all the help,

Sorry, the PC is not in a domain, it is a standalone machine.

Just checked out admin tools and got none, so maybe a windows repair may be needed??

Since one other poster mentioned a DNS problem... Have you put a sniffer on the wire to see if there's any activity there that could account for the problem?

Hmm - this is familiar - I just can't remember the details that I did to fix it when it happened to me over a year ago.

Other things to check:

1. Event log - see if there is anything out of the ordinary
2. Network card - current drivers? (if you can swap to a different one and see if the problem goes away - if there is another onboard nic, switch to it and disable the other one)
3. Network cable - swap it out
4. Different port in the switch
5. Last ditch - remove it from the domain, delete the computer object and then re-add it back in.

Just some thoughts. Good luck!

What is your PATH set to? START, Run, type cmd and enter and type PATH and enter.
Check to see that some old program directory is not in there.

Are you mapped to a network drive that no longer exists? Check in Explorer by holding the Windows Key and E and letting go.
Tools->Disconnect Network Drive

Are you running a login script with errors in it? Presuming you are on a domain, check your account settings for a script file.

Good luck with that.

One other thing to check, I had a similar issue with a client, and it turned out that his USB attached HP printer, had several media card slots built into it for reading digital camera cards. Apparently those can also be boot devices so it was looking at each one. No HP updates fixed it, so basically whenever they have to reboot the PC, or turn it on, they just shut off the printer and it boots fine, then turn printer back on.
