Actually I have 2 questions:
I have a small workgroup of 3 XP Pro systems, 2 win98 systems, 1 win 2000 server and a 16 port ethernet switch(100mbps). I have enabled the ICS in the server and each compter can access files/printers and internet with the help of DHCP.

1) When I access the win98 computer from 2000 server it becomes very very slow while other computer can access that easily. What could be the problem?

2) Recently I connected a XP Home laptop to this workgroup it automatially accessed everything in the workgroup except the shared files/printer connected to the server. It always asks for the password when it access the 2000server shared files and printers.

Any advise on the above 2 would be highly appreciated.

It could help you with your speed problems:

1. If you use ICS it means that you have at least two connections. So verify the order for your network connections on the server. Go to Network connections on Control Panel, on menu make click in "Advanced" and them point to "Advanced Settings ..." It?s recommendable that your internal network have the first priority on your network search order. This is important for name resolution and internal communication.

2. Verify that you didn?t use a gateway on your internal network TCP/IP properties (If your network is too small maybe you don?t need a gateway on your internal network, only at the external one), if you use it, check the entries on the routing table.

3. Configure, if possible, all your network cards to work manually with 100 mbps and full duplex. (I think this is not problem for you because you have a 100 mbps switch)

4. Check the TCP/IP properties for your internal network on the server. If possible use internal WINS and DNS server service and configure it at the TCP/IP properties on the server and include it on the DHCP Scope for your network.


It could help you with your access problem with the laptop:

Plan A: Create on the server the exactly user that you use to logon on the laptop and them check the appropriate permissions for this user on the shared files and printers.

Plan B: Configure your server with permissions for anonymous logon on shared files and printers (It decrease the security for your workgroup)

XP Home is not meant to be networked. If you have a domain set up make sure the win 98 computers are joined correctly. Also make sure your DNS is correct. If the server is set up as a DC With DNS running then your primary in your workstations should be set to the IP of the server. Static IP fro the server that is.

Make sure the 98 boxes are NOT the master browser. If you are using a Host File disable it on all systems. By defualt it is enabled. If NetBEUI or DLC is configured - uninstall it. What is protecting the 98 boxes (firewall)? If so, create a rule to allow 2 way traffic to the server. Make sure the NICs in the 98’s are uptodate witht he firmware / drivers.

Many good answers here. Configure your 2000 server to hold the master browser. As soon as pos. upgrade win98 to XP. It is known to create problem in a workgroup with win98 and XP. Result could be file corruption.
