I have several users who are tracking reservations in Excel workbooks. The files are opening very slowly, compromising customer service. We are planning to install a custom C-S reservations app, but I need a fix now.
The problem is worst on new machines (P4 3.0GHz w/ 512MB RAM) running WinXPsp2 and Office 2K3. It takes 90-120 seconds to open a 500K file. The issue remains if I copy the file from the server to the local machine and open it there. Here's the funny part: If I put the machine in Safe Mode and open the file locally, it opens in <5 seconds. If I turn on RDC and open it from a remote machine, it opens in <5 seconds. There appears to be a lot of network activity happening during the long opening attempts.
The files have been trimmed to remove blank cells. I've deleted temp files and checked file associations to make sure they are referencing "%1" to include spaces in the file name. We don't have Text-to-Speech turned on. I've heard that Symantec AntiVirus could be a problem - I've excluded the files, and even turned off Real-time protection. I haven't uninstalled SAV. I've heard that HP print drivers could be a problem. We've changed the driver from HP 1320 back to vanilla HP4.
I'm stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
