Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

There is no reason to say you will lose what is stored in your hard
drive just because you don’t remember a password (except if data is
encrypted and the encryption password is the one lost, which I don’t
think is the case here).

if this is happening in a corporate environment, then your IT department has most likely a way to reset your password.

Don’t
panic.  Just ask them to reset your password.  If they refuse to do it,
put your boss on notice, so they can take appropriate action.

Even If it is an individual/ home pc, you don't feel guilty/ panic. There are several ways to overcome this issue. If you are an expert/ comfortable to face this kind of situation, so many tools (free/cost) can help you to recover password/ bring the pc again in working condition. You can download "Ophcrack a free tool that can help you a lot. And if you are not so comfortable, ask an expert nearby your area (whose jobs related to computer hardware/software) and s/he can help you regarding this issue. S/he can recover password/ bring the pc as earlier it worked like position without format/ delete any valuable/ working data.

I am the main user on the Computer and IT said they will have to rebuild the computer so that is why I will lose everything on my hard drive.  I downloaded Windows password killer pro on a USB stick but the computer would not accept it so I copied it to a disk and it still would not accept the disk.  I have been told about pressing F* loads of times to get into the Bios but I am not sure about this. I told IT I was going to buy the proper version of password killer myself and they were not happy, I have also been told that I can use the hard drive as an external one but again IT are not happy!  I am cheered up a bit today but I am still worried that I have to lose everything when  and if they have to rebuild it.

    Thank you for your answers

Who mandated the password change, was it your IT dept. or an application? If IT required it you should ask why the change was needed. Any descent IT staff should be able to recover a forgotten password. There are a few programs out there that can do this as a last resort. As for buying and loading software on you company owned PC that may be an issue. A lot of companies have strict policies in place to prevent people possibly infecting the network. If all else fails, like mentioned above go talk to your boss/supervisor and explain the situation.

The machine requested the password change.  I have spoken to the Boss and he says don't worry. IT say they are coming to rebuild the computer on Friday and we will lose the info on the Hard Drive.  I am the only user on the PC.  IT have tried so they say but they are unable to get in.  I tried the Bios to boot up a USB Stick but I could not find the drive, it just said the date of the Bios which was version 7 and the date so I gave up.  Even tried the safe mode but that did not work either.

You may want to search for "PASSWORD RECOVERY"
I was given a link to try. If IT is coming to rebuild your computer you may have nothing to lose trying it. Run it past them and see if it's something they may want to try.

As the conversation is going long, sorry for my interaction with my little knowledge. Why your IT people is going to rebuild the pc again without taking backups ! And why ! I am so astonished to know that, your IT people told to rebuild/ simply format this pc without taking backups.... is there no other way to recover it without losing data ! Yes, there are several ways, but If all are fail, still there is a way to take necessary backups before formatting/ rebuilding the computer. And yes, tell your IT people (they may know this procedure) to detach/ disconnect the Hard Drive from your PC and attach as a slave in a running computer (either Windows/ Linux, no problem). Restart/ Boot this running PC (where your HDD attached) and it will show as a drive in My Computer/ Explorer or it will show as drive in Linux desktop. Just open it and you can take all of your valuable data in a separate USB/ flash drive/ writable CD/DVD whatever it is. After taking backups of your HDD, shut down this pc and again detach/ disconnect your HDD from this running PC, now properly attach this HDD in your PC as a Master, now leave this PC for rebuild/ format and ask for install necessary licensed softwares. After when it will in working condition, copy all of your data from the source. When I am writing this, it took a quiet long time, but when do this trick, it will take few times and accept or tolerate some delays during this procedure.

    Hi

Thank you ever so much.  I am smiling again now and I am sure that I am not the only one in the world that has done this stupid thing.

It's not a stupid thing.... One thing I have learned from working a help desk in my early years (30+ ago) was this. Most people who forgot what they changed their new password to did this on a Friday or before a holiday weekend. If they did not use it again, that day or the next, to reinforce it into memory it was lost over the weekend and we would have to issue a new one.... It happens, but I never told anyone we'd have to re-build their PC to resolve it.
