Should we use Hyper-V snapshot for backup on SQL Server 2008

So we have SQL Server 2008 in Hyper-V as a supported configuration. It's been performing well since we're using fixed or pass-through disks (which has increased our processor/memory settings).

My big question is can we use snapshots as a reliable backup mechanism? Should we use the tried and trusted maintenance plan to do our backups?
