I want to implement a 3 layer (SP, SQL, IIS) SharePoint 2013 development environment, plus direct access, and keep the costs down by ordering only one copy of Windows 2012 standard. With a regular install I guess this is the normal VMs I will have on Windows 2012:
VM2: SP & DC
VM3: IIS & Direct Access
Now, my questions are:
1) Is the Edge server required? Can I replace it with a normal router?
2) by moving things around and installing some roles on windows 8 instead of 2012, can reduce the number of windows 2012 VMs?
3) if moving them to windows 8 is not doable, which roles would you recommend moving to windows 2012 foundation in another physical computer?
4) Another option I thought of was installing ESXI or Hyper-V server 2012, then installing up to 4 Windows 2008 R2 VMs instead (except for Direct Access which again has to go on 2012 foundation)
A separate question is: Would I have any reason to get more than 2 x NIC that comes with my Intel DZ77RE-75K motherboard?
